Charles Chu

Mr. Chu has over 40 years of experience in both the Chinese and US chemical industries. Mr. Chu started his career at Jilin Chemical (now part of PetroChina) where he designed and managed a major part of its production infrastructure. Mr. Chu also held senior technical management position at Guangdong provincial agricultural chemical bureau. He is a graduate of chemical engineering at Dalian University in China.

Mr. Chu has over 15 years of experience managing Chinese and US chemical and pharmaceutical companies. At Eastar, he started as Sales and Marketing Manager before his role as president. Currently he is also in charge of building Eastar's China Sales business in Shanghai. In addition to Eastar, Mr. Chu is a seasoned entrepreneur. He invests and is instrumental in building a number of start-up businesses. He is a graduate of Cal Poly in California, USA.

Vice President of Eastar Specialty Chemicals

A graduate of Ohio University, Howard L. Brainard has been actively involved in the chemical industry for over 40 years, starting his career with Diamond Shamrock Chemical Corporation and continuing with Atlantic Richfield Corporation, Inolex Chemical Company, and Reichhold in senior executive positions of responsibility, both domestically and internationally.

Joining Eastar Chemical Corp. in 1987, Mr. Brainard has been instrumental in Eastar’s growing from a Chinese trading company to a respected global supplier of specialty and custom-made chemicals in all market areas.

Maintaining a vast network of chemical relationships and continuing involvement with the major chemical associations, Mr. Brainard is frequently called upon for industry advice and consultation worldwide.

William (Billy) Loflin, Vice President of Eastar Colorants

William (Billy) Loflin


Vice President of Eastar Colorants

Mr. Loflin has over 30 years of experience in the Colorants industry. Prior to becoming VP of Eastar Colorants, Mr. Loflin was the General Manager of Bayer’s Colorants Division in South Corolina. During the course of his career, Mr. Loflin had been in charge of laboratory, research and development, production, quality management, and corporate planning. He had spent the past 5 years in China developing and implementing Eastar’s China strategic plans as well as managing operations in sales, marketing, R&D, supply chain, manufacturing, and quality. He is also responsible for the identification and acquisition of customers, formation of business alliances, management of financial and human resources for the Colorants division.

Mr. Loflin has a BS and business degree from University of Alabama.

Michel Bulliard, Ph. D


Vice President of Eastar Pharmaceutical Products

Dr. Bulliard has held senior management positions for major chemical and pharmaceutical companies including Pfizer, PPG Industries and Solvay Pharmaceuticals.

Prior to becoming part of Eastar Chemicals, Dr. Bulliard was Business Development Manager of Synkem. During the course of his career, Dr. Bulliard had managed process research and development team in fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. He had then led the business development and sales of a fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals business in Europe.

Dr. Bulliard has a PhD in organic chemistry from University of Lyon, France and a MBA from ESSEC, France. Dr. Bulliard is based in France.

Shaojie Wang, Ph. D


R&D manager of Eastar

For over 16 years professor Wang has been actively involved in the research of medicinal and process chemistry. He is now an associate professor of Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Key Laboratory of Structure-based Drugs Design & Discovery of Ministry of Education, School of Pharmaceutical Engineering, Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, China.


Professor Wang’s research interests are focused in two areas: one is structure-based drug design of inhibitors of aldose reductase, α-glucosidase and xanthine oxidase with the aim of finding small molecular compounds as the potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of diabetes mellitus (and its complications) and gout. The other is process development research of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and their intermediates.


At Eastar Chemical, professor Wang is responsible for R&D and devotes himself in providing high-quality products to our customers.

Jim Bruno, Advisor

Mr. Bruno has held senior executive positions in numerous companies including Honeywell, Vinchem, Aeroject, and Sipsy. He is actively involved with chemical, pharmaceutical and educational industries - as the past president of DCAT, at-large Informex Planning Committee of SOCMA, and Chairman of Scientific Advisory Executive Committee of Rider University.

Prior to becoming an Advisor to Eastar Chemicals, Mr. Bruno was the Global Business Manager for Honeywell. Mr. Bruno sits on editorial committees and is a regular contributor for many industry magazines, including Pharmachem, Chemical and Engineering News, Chimica Oggi. Mr. Bruno is an organizer and speaker for numerous industry scientific events and training seminars on topics such as outsourcing, FDA and advancement in technologies such as drug development, chromatography, and catalysts.

Mr. Bruno has a MS in Chemistry from St. Joseph’s University and a MBA from Rider University.

Dr. Gold has a wealth of experience and achievements in the regulatory compliance field, including: Appointed to FDA’s Pharmaceutical Science Manufacturing Subcommittee; Recipient of the PDA Distinguished Service Award; Originated and have taught professional courses to more than 2100 industry; FDA and other Board of Health representatives in the US, Europe and Asia over the past eighteen years; Routinely teach FDA Investigators advanced topics at FDA ORAU; Developed the rationale and criteria for all corporate Lederle and Par process validation programs covering active pharmaceutical ingredients, oral, topical and parenteral dosage forms; Developed the rationale and criteria for all corporate Lederle and Par qualification and validation procedures for processing equipment, laboratory equipment, computer systems, water systems, HVAC, equipment cleaning and product packaging.

Dr. Gold is actively involved in the industry including: Member of FDA Manufacturing Subcommittee of the Advisory Committee for Pharmaceutical Science, 2003-Present; Product Quality Research Initiative Drug Substance Technical Committee Member, 1997-Present; Chair of PDA Committees responding to the 2001 ICH Q7A Guidance for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, the 1998 FDA BACPAC I Guidance, the 1996 and 1998 FDA Guidance for Industry on Manufacture, Processing or Holding of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients and the 1997 PIC-PIC/S Internationally Harmonized Guide for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients; Chair of the Operations Section of PhRMA for two years; PhRMA Operations Section Executive Committee member for seven years; Chair of PhRMA Bulk Pharmaceutical Chemicals Committee for two years; PDA Board of Directors Member for three years; Chair of PDA International Congress, Osaka 1997; Chair of first Annual FDA/PDA Joint Meeting, 1992; Chair of PhRMA Committee responding to 1984 FDA Guide to Bulk Pharmaceutical Chemicals Manufacturing.

Mr. Mo has held senior executive positions for Fortune 500 companies including GE Plastics, Olin, Praxair, FMC, Great Lakes Chemicals and Motorola.

Prior to becoming an Advisor to Eastar Chemicals, Mr. Mo was the Managing Director, China for Micron Technology. During the course of his career, Mr. Mo had spent over 20 years in China developing and implementing many China strategic plans and establishing and managing operations in sales, marketing, R&D, corporate services, supply chain and manufacturing. He was also responsible for the identification and acquisition of customers, formation of business alliances, management of financial and human resources in China.

Mr. Mo has a MBA and MS in Management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan. Mr. Mo was born in Shanghai and is a Connecticut Resident and a United States Citizen. He speaks, reads and writes Chinese fluently.
